I've recorded a voice memo, but all I recorded was silence.

Make sure the headphones are not plugged into the iFM at the time of recording. If the headphones are plugged in, the iPod will think a microphone has been attached and will treat the headphones as the mic, therefore creating a file with very low or no volume.
