When good iPhones die

Photo from Flickr by magerleaguesThere’s an interesting post on CIO today by Tom Kaneshige about strange ways people kill their iPhones. We naturally shed a tear for every broken device, but accidents happen.

Aaron Cooper, marketing director at Worth Ave. Group, a company that insures consumer electronics shares the most popular ways good iPhones die.

Water is the number one iPhone enemy. According to Cooper, washing machines and toilets are popular places people part with their iPhones.

Young party goers are also responsible for many iPhones getting destroyed from people being sick on them (yuck!). Many also get stolen at parties as they are left unattended to play music.

Shattered displays are a big reason why people need to replace their iPhones. In the post, Cooper recalls a story about a cat that swatted a vibrating iPhone across a room. Interesting to note, that a test by Worth Ave. Group at last year’s MacWorld found screen protectors not only protect device displays from scratches, but also helps prevent them from shattering.

Check out the full post to learn about other ways people have parted with their favorite devices.

What’s the worst story you’ve heard about an iPhone, iPod or iPad getting destroyed?

The beauty is that most problems can be fixed pretty easily- a shattered screen can be fixed for under $30. You just have to be careful. :)

Not one of the worst I’ve heard, but we had to replace my fiance’s iPhone a year ago due to water damage. We took our boxer puppy to a “Doggy Dip” in September (before our neighborhood pool closes for the season they let the dogs in for a swim) and she ran over and into the pool the moment we arrived. She had never seen a pool before so I guess she didn’t know what it was, but she was running one moment and *sinking* the next.

All you could see was her floating butt at the surface.

My fiance had to dive in and save her, it was only after we had pulled her back on dry land that we realized he had his iPhone in his pocket…bricked.

I’m happy to hear that your dog was alright. Your fiance is a hero!
Does she swim now? Or does she avoid the pool?

Sorry to hear about the iPhone. :(

Killed iPod shuffle 2G with sweat, running. Replaced it with an iPod Nano 5G, which lasted about 3 runs before it konked. Apple replaced it, now the replacement is fritzing.

I had an old Classic that I beat the hell out of for years before it went dead. I’m not sure the newer iPods are as well-made as the old ones. They are flimsy.

Bought a new 4G Shuffle this week. We’ll see how it works.

Last thought: an electronic device should not require a case. The electronics are already inside a case; it’s called the shell.
